About this tool

Lists the anchor text of every link on a page, groups repeated text, and flags the links that describe nothing.

Anchor text is the only description a destination gets from the page linking to it. "Click here" and "read more" tell a search engine nothing — and tell a screen reader user tabbing through a list of links even less, since they hear the text without the sentence around it. The accessibility failure and the SEO failure are the same failure.

It also flags the opposite problem: the same anchor text pointing at two different URLs, which makes both look interchangeable.

Common questions

What makes good anchor text?

Text that would still make sense read on its own, out of the sentence. If someone hears only your links in sequence, each should say where it goes.

Is "click here" really a problem?

It wastes the one description the destination gets, and it is a genuine accessibility failure — screen readers offer a links list, where a page full of "click here" is unusable. It will not get you penalised; it just does nothing.

Can anchor text be over-optimised?

On internal links, rarely — you control them and they are expected to be descriptive. Identical keyword-stuffed anchors pointing at one page from across a site is a recognised spam pattern, but writing naturally avoids it without effort.

Why flag the same text going to different URLs?

Because it makes two destinations look like the same thing. If "pricing" points at two different pages, neither the reader nor a crawler can tell them apart.
