There is no correct keyword density and this tool does not pretend otherwise. The number is useful for two things: checking that a page is about what you think it is about, and catching a phrase you have repeated far more than you realised. It is not a target to hit.
Common questions
What keyword density should I aim for?
None. There is no threshold that helps, and the idea comes from search engines of twenty years ago. Write for the reader; use this to check the page reads as being about the right thing, and to catch accidental repetition.
Can I be penalised for keyword stuffing?
Text written to hit a density rather than to be read tends to be obviously bad, and it performs badly for that reason. You do not need a percentage to tell when a page repeats a phrase unnaturally — reading it aloud works better.
Why are common words excluded?
"the" and "and" are always the most frequent words in English and say nothing about a topic. They are counted for the totals and left out of the ranking.
What are two- and three-word phrases for?
They are usually more revealing than single words. A page can mention "audit" often without ever saying "technical SEO audit", which is what someone would actually search for.
