About this tool
Paste a title on the first line and a meta description on the second, and this estimates where each will be truncated.
Search engines cut on rendered width, not on character count. A title in capitals runs out of room far sooner than the same number of lowercase letters, which is why character-counting tools disagree with what you actually see. This measures approximate width instead — still an estimate, because the exact font and device vary, but a much closer one.
Common questions
Why does this disagree with character-count tools?
Because they count the wrong thing. Search engines truncate on rendered width. "WWW MMM WWW" and "iii lll iii" are the same length in characters and nowhere near it on screen.
Will Google show exactly what I write?
Often not. Search engines frequently generate their own title or snippet when they judge it a better match for the query. A good one is still worth writing — it is what gets used when it is used.
Does the mobile width differ?
Yes, and it changes. Rather than presenting one device as the truth, this estimates the desktop width, which is the tighter constraint for titles in practice.
How accurate is the estimate?
Close enough to tell a safe title from one that will clearly be cut, and not exact. The rendering font, the device and the query all move the real boundary, which is why the result is labelled an estimate rather than a limit.
